Karl Schmidt Verlag: Free Album Available for Download!

Hello All,

I began the Karl Schmidt Verlag label in November 2008, shortly after my move to Hannover, Germany.

Envisioned as a wholly private imprint, KSV does no press, issues no promo materials, and is intended strictly for enthusiasts. KSV caters to the advanced aesthetics of its customers by offering micro-edition releases of artworks that defy, renounce, disrupt and dismember the usual, deadening contemporary tropes and wan "extremes."

We publish music, books, the odd short film collection. Some of you have them all.

(Thank you!)

To show our gratitude, we've prepared a free, album-length mega-mix version of the first 47 albums released on KSV.

KSV 057 Hussey He Sisters - Karl Schmidt Verlag Master Mix Nov 2009

If you want it, take it.

Go here!

Of course, if you didn't realize we existed, and thus didn't know - depending on your inclinations - what you were missing, then we have only been doing our job. I trust you'll forgive us if we adopt a less private stance, at least for this brief moment...

Hot Off the Teletype from KSV!

Hello Good People!

Very happy to present the latest micro-edition from Karl Schmidt Verlag:

KSV 056 Alexei Borisov & Olga Nosova - Salon am Lichtenbergplatz

This is the complete aktion from Sunday evening, minus ten unnecessarily recorded minutes of random post-performance gab. Those in attendance witnessed a transcendent set from Olga and Alexei, one that evoked the sounds of garbled line readings broadcast from blasted obsidian sets of outer-galactic, multi-species melodramas. Just terrific.

I joined the duo for a short collaborative set afterwards; all has been stitched together, sans the usual interim shuffling and shifting.

Alexei Borisov - voice, electronics
Olga Nosova - voice, electronics, and percussion

with

Tom Smith - voice and texts

01 Complete Performance (43:31)

Edition of 15.

Pricing:

As usual. € 8.49 EU / € 10.00 elsewhere / €1 for each additional album

Many, many thanks!

Earlier Worms...

Hello Again,

Those of you who ordered the Crvi (KSV 051) and Wohlklang: 14. Nov (KSV 055) albums haven't long to wait, as the packages shipped just a few minutes ago.

Herr Bruno B's parcel was the first out the coop:

Two New Releases on Karl Schmidt Verlag!

(Amended and expanded 24 Nov 09.)

Goodlier Holes!

The CP is listening to "Heart and Soul", the second bottle of red has drained away, Tobi is gesticulating midway through a disquisition on pink pepper chocolate, and I've crawled away from the kitchen just long enough to spill the pintos on the two newest KSV orthostats!

Threaded foray? Sehr gut!

KSV 051 Crvi - Two Adaptive Behavioral Collisions

Crvi document rusted hulks, calcified electrodes, lost opportunities, and lingering doubts. The duo of Zizic and Mihovilovic hail from Split, Croatia, and their machines have achieved a malign sort of independence. We are pleased by the sounds they refuse to make...

--

Crvi: power/electronics

01 Two Adaptive Behavior Collisions (29:44)
02 Version (TS mix) (29:47)

Edition of 15.

KSV 055 Wohlklang: 14. Nov (Tomoko Sauvage)

Tomoko Sauvage lives in Paris, and sleeps in the welcoming mouth of a manta. She conjures arid vistas with bowls of water.

As (my Three Resurrected Drunkards partner) Pit Noack noted after Sauvage's performance, she could have turned the master gain of her mixer much louder, but she wisely demurred.

Nature is slow, quiet, and incredibly destructive, one drop at a time...

Tomoko Sauvage - water, bowls, hydrophones and microphones, cups, flexible poles

01 Complete Performance (33:50)
02 Version (TS mix) (33:50)

Edition of 15.

We're going out to Faust now, so I'll have to fill in the details (and upload sound/audio files) on the morrow. If you trust our obscenely high quality, don't require further info, and chose to order now, your panting parcels will go out in the morning's post!

Prices as always: € 8.49 each for the EU, and €10.00 everywhere else.

Gotta run!

Best,

Tom (Karl says Hallo too!)

Likening New KSV Release Volleys to Ungovernable Forces of Nature Pt. 660...

Greetings from KSV Zentrum!

Karl and stooped insiders are preparing a month-long new release fiesta set to begin Friday. Gird exposed loins and open the moth-ridden vaults, because you'll want more than an arthritic handful.

On October 30th we'll be re-releasing our document of late September's sterling Silke Arp Bricht performances by frequent Caroliner contributor Core of the Coalman and Hannover improvisor Pit Noack (it sold out so quickly that even our regulars were unable to obtain it, so we're issuing a one-time-only second edition of five); at the weekend we'll also be offering the debut Atelier Grammophon performance by superb Hannoverian avant-concrète duo Generator 2 (KSV 049).

These releases will follow, accompanied by the usual nervous tics and defeaning borborygmi:

To Live and Shave in L.A. - Die Fehde des Gemischs (KSV 030). Three discs. We know you've been waiting...

TS - To Which Clotted Horrors Do You Fail to Refer? (KSV 041). Ninety miniatures, sung and performed by our initialled resident hierophant. Many moons in the making.

Withered Runes - Unworthy Censer (KSV 047). Relics of the late 60s Cambridge scene, fondly dismembered.

40 Berlin Versions (KSV 050). A five-hour birthday party is cross-sectioned. Consider this as a warning.

Crvi - 2 Adaptive Behaviors (KSV 051). New sounds from Split, Croatia's wormiest overlords!

And a still-unnamed album from our Romanian mastering prodigies Linda, Viola & Uwe (KSV 052)!

Plus: Tom Smith - Naturally Occuring Black Metal λόγος (KSV 044). An 80-page photobook with accompanying CD. Strictly limited edition of ten. 45 Euro, postpaid. Once they're gone, they're gone to Norway.

And, at the beginning of December, What's a qNadsat Word for Tank Jazz?, a hulking 10-month anniversary box containing the first 50 KSV releases, a bonus CD, two bonus DVDs, and a gigantic color poster. Limited edition of 10. 160 Euro, postpaid. Each takes a week to assemble, so if you've an interest, reserve your place in queue now!

You know where to ask and what not to wear. Avanti!

New New New New from Karl Schmidt Verlag!

Good Morning,

We have a new compendium ready on the pad for immediate launch...

KSV 048 Silke Arp Bricht: 29. Sep (Core of the Coalman vs. Pit Noack)

An exciting, intimate evening of full-bore instrumental (and concrète) improvisation. Jorge Boehringer (aka Core of the Coalman) soared, and Herr Noack (my partner in the duo Three Resurrected Drunkards) played what was perhaps his best solo set ever. Exceptional musicians, and two superb sets of immersive, forward-thinking sound.

01 Pit Noack - Untitled (17:19)

(PN: tape decks, prepared cassettes, speaker array)

02 Core of the Coalman - Untitled (39:29)

(Jorge Boehringer: viola and treatments, voice)

03 Version (18:08)

(Mixed by TS at KSV HQ, Hannover, 6 Oct 09)

--

Recorded live by Karl on the H2 Zoom.
Edited, mixed and produced by TS at KSV HQ, Hannover.
Mastered by Linda, Viola & Uwe at Slab Alucard, Cluj-Napoca.

Here's info cribbed from Core of the Coalman's Facebook profile:

"We are influenced by many things we read, and also people that we talk to. Also we are influenced by our environments, both actively and passively. By actively I mean I practice an attentiveness to landscapes I move through both "urban" and "rural" and am influenced by many things entering my senses and mind in these environments, not to mention the environments encountered while dreaming. I learned this other artists and philosophers and their work. So its original."

KSV: Eight New Releases!

Hello Droogies!

Since late August, Karl and I have been working round the clock to smuggle a cache of degenerate skullfuckery directly to your mom's backdoor. Just a few minutes ago we jumped the gate, dropped off the rucksack, ripped away our fake moustaches, exchanged our doctored Bolivian passports for dual Iranian/Israeli documents, and took the nearest photon accelerator back to HQ for this debriefing. Ready?

KSV 025 VA - Karl Schmidt Verlag: Was du nicht wissen wolltest... (2xCD)

The label's first 25 releases fused, unmercifully chopped at odd angles, then sewn back together again. Brain-blowing ur-cacophony, six months in the unmaking.

Disc One

101 Untwists Chastened Willows (70:27)

Disc Two

201 Hatch Midst Milk Storm (76:59)

Edited, mixed and produced by Tom Smith for KSV.

Edition of 15.

--

KSV 045 Eugene Chadbourne - Live, Silke Arp Bricht, Hannover, 19 Sept 09

(2xCD, plus limited bonus disc)

Hot off the subhuman switchboard, this document of Dr. Chadbourne's recent two-hour stand at local culture dungeon Silke Arp Bricht will flay your remaining azure seedlings. Needless to sputter, more spittoon-dunked greatness from the North Carolinian rake maestro.

Disc One

101 Pt. 1 (53:00)

Disc Two

201 Pt. 2 (48:48)

Disc Three (limited to the first ten orders)

301 Version (TS mix) (54:03)

Composed and performed by EC.

Recorded by Karl at SAP, Hannover.
Edited and produced by Tom Smith for KSV.
Mastered by Linda, Viola & Uwe at Slab Alucard, Cluj-Napoca.

Edition of 20.

KSV 046 Academia Riding Rust - A Perforated Rink

If you're as nauseated by All Tomorrow's Parties' fetid penchant for hauling elder cabals out of semi-retirement to perform ancient texts for lazy rubberneckers as we are, then this screed is right up your core collapse! ARR took Suicide's recent (and wholly unnecessary) ATP live run-through of their '77 Red Star debut platter, squeezed it through the galley porthole of Mark Knoffler's 700-foot runabout, and drove the point past the vacant lot where the Dirty Three's last shred of dignity was found gagged, broken, and defiled. You know what comes next...

Composed by ARR.

01 A Perforated Rink (42:21)

Edited, mixed and produced TS for KSV, September 2009.

Mastered by Linda, Viola & Uwe at Slab Alucard, Cluj-Napoca.

Edition of 15.

--

KSV 043 Ikea Cafe Ambiance vs. Schützenfest Autumn Carnival

Recorded September 5. A day trip to the home furnishings colossus, then a slow stroll around a particularly threadbare carny encampment. A flourishing ace shunts sons; hot hypermedia tots curtly purr "Barracuda therapy tiller..."

01 Ikea Cafe Ambiance (17:03)
02 SAC (12:02)
03 Composite (17:03)
04 Version (17:39)

Recorded by Karl at Ikea, Hannover, and the Schützenfest Autumn Carnival, Küchengarten, Hannover, on September 5, 2009.

Mixed and produced by Tom Smith at KSV HQ, Hannover.

Mastered by Linda, Viola & Uwe at Slab Alucard, Cluj-Napoca.

Edition of 10.

--

KSV 042 Christopher Fleeger - 1977, USA

A document of the San Francisco-based improvisor's bracing, consistently satisfying early September performance at Silke Arp Bricht. Such a relief from the usual, respectable dull presence offered by other abstract sound artists... Fleeger's footage of venerable mice provide explicit links between militia postulations and dowagers' palms. Epic, and epicene.

Composed and performed by Christopher Fleeger.

Recorded live by Karl at Pit's Salon, Silke Arp Bricht (foyer), Hannover, on September 2, 2009.

Opening/closing remarks by PN.

Edited and produced by TS for KSV.

Mastered by Linda, Viola & Uwe at Slab Alucard, Cluj-Napoca.

CF: modified pads, mallets, brainwave amplifier

01 Complete Set (40:47)
02 Version (TS mix) (19:05)

Didn't realize until after the set that Herr Fleeger's a homeboy - he grew up less than 60 miles from my sleepy native hamlet...

Edition of 15.

KSV 040 Three Resurrected Drunkards - Baukasten: Exact Linearity

The third release from the duo of Pit Noack and Tom Smith, one that takes their shattered aesthetic (as represented by rehearsal and live recordings made at the titular venue in August) to illogical extremes of abstraction.

Composed and performed by PN and TS.

(Extracted elements of "I Must Mourn" composed by Tim Lane Seaton & Tom Smith/Rope Cosmetology.)

PN: cassette decks, prepared tapes, speaker array.
TS: voice

Recorded by Tom at Baukasten, Hannover, and by Pit at Zum Zigaretten, Hannover, August 2009.

Edited, mixed, and produced by TS for KSV, September 2009.

Mastered by Linda, Viola & Uwe at Slab Alucard, Cluj-Napoca.

01 Nitrate Lyricist (6:22)
02 Clarinetist I Try (6:41)
03 Beak Aunts (6:10)
04 Absent Auk (25:56)
05 Proper Monsoons (10:59)
06 Drachma Lipstick Knot (9:29)

Edition of 15.

KSV 039 Anne - An Innkeeper's Totems

Anne is an orphaned keyring amulet. This is her first album for Karl Schmidt Verlag.

Anne has little patience for Beatles/Stones schlager remakes. Her wrath has been made flesh...

01 Anne Pt. 1 (21:26)
02 Anne Pt. 2 (10:50)
03 Anne Pt. 3 (16:02)
04 Anne Pt. 4 (18:02)

Composed, recorded, mixed and produced by Anne at Mallard Kvetch Rigs, Celle, Germany, August-September 2009.

Mastered by Linda, Viola & Uwe at Slab Alucard, Cluj-Napoca.

Edition of 15.

KSV 038 Gaunt Exes - Trunk Situ

Karl Schmidt and TS collaborate at long last! The assemblages were crafted by Herr Schmidt, and the vocal shards were injected into soft, pulpy tissue by Smith. Very fucking dangerous to your ears. (Defaced shipwrights' adzes agree.)

Likely to scrub pesky foul notions from your latest tony infrared summons...

01 Quota Torments (20:09)
02 Irk Me (20:46)
03 Omit Copse (20:53)
04 Papal Louse Op (4:57)

Composed and performed August-September 2009 by Karl Schmidt (assemblages) and Tom Smith (voice and electronics).

The third disc, a 45-minute DVD of various short videos shot during (and around) the April sessions, will also be included.

Thanks very much for waiting on us to finish the album. It's a collection of rehearsal recordings, so there are occasional flubs, errors, missed beats, blown notes, etc., but THIS GROUP DESTROYS and I don't think you'll mind the odd imperfect moment.

Yours Faithfully,

Tom, for Tim, Ryan, Feri, and Balazs.

KSV Post-Chiropractic Report...

Hello Again,

We've had to adjust our release schedule again, albeit just slightly. The Rope Cosmetology double disc and the Katje Fregatte album will both be available on Thursday, August 20. Set your cicadas accordingly...

Still a few copies left of the Maude and Female Reggae Showcase albums; the Alpha 66 release is almost gone, so if you were waiting, act!

(Wow... One of our neighbors is having an epic shouting match with her partner.)

An additional pair of releases (KSV 038 and 039) are in the post-production queue as well. You will receive ample warning.

All the Best,

Tom & Karl

Los sobrevivientes demanda de acción! (New KSV!)

Hello Again,

Brian Cook's favorite unreleased TLASILA-related oddity was the 1998 album by Alpha 66, Pax Sovietica. Once on the Smack Shire shortlist (but sensibly scrubbed when my partner in the label, Gerard Klauder, reckoned it would return less than an nth of our investment), this paean to Cuban-American paranoia was hatched in Miami Beach during an impossibly muggy, appropriately ominous June afternoon by yours truly, and quickly filed away after an ex-girlfriend implored me to burn the tapes, lest I be murdered by anti-Castro extremists.

It's far less threatening an affair, if truth be pried from shattered molars. I merely plopped a cassette into a boombox, tuned the unit to a local AM station specializing in overdriven salsa and merengue, and edited the proceedings in real time. (I grant that it's extraordinarily fucked, however...)

Brian often privately expressed his delight with the results, and decried the cruelty of a marketplace gone far too pink and prickly to allow for Pax Sovietica's release. But, the marketplace is finished, and the old paradigms are wizened beyond resuscitation.

Time, then, for Alpha 66!

KSV Updated Update!

Hi Again,

It's been a mad work week, and I've still one day to go. Exhaustion has become my fuel, and the darker circles around the sunken sockets of my once-sparkling orbs provide a beacon for wraiths and nightgaunts. I feel like a million Euros (that have been soaked in caustic lye)...

On to business: each of our previously issued releases is now SOLD OUT. We have a few copies of some of the more recent titles reserved for our distributor, Tochnit Aleph, but apart from those, everything is gone.

Many thanks to our regulars and occasional passersby for your very kind support.

Coming August 1: the debut album by Female Reggae Showcase (KSV 017), and (this is new, by the way), on August 5, the debut platter by Maude (KSV 036).

Thanks as always for your illuminating emails. The instant feedback is always appreciated!

Yours Faithfully,

Karl

KSV Update...

Good Morning Lovelies,

Off to work in a few minutes, so while I'm murdering the fragile moments left before I bolt for the tram, I may as well give you the blood-flecked lowdown on the next raft of releases:

Careening toward you on August 1st, the long-delayed and much dithered-over Female Reggae Showcase album (Kid Traumgekrönt/U-Hölderlin Super-Clash!) will have mud all over its corsets, but will nonetheless be available. On August 15, you can finally get your mitts on the 2xCD Rope Cosmetology studio collection, Spezial: Gedankengefüge (Compound Thought). No need for hype on this one - those in the know know. Verstehen Sie? August 23 finds Katja Frigate's Coldplay Nancarrow Burzum Hines assemblage at last ready for public aring, and September 1 will mark the escape of our slightly delayed 25th disc (especially as we're already up to number 35!), the all-encompassing, all-knowing, all-deflecting mega-mix compilation Karl Schmidt Verlag: Was du nicht wissen wolltest? Also on this date, the 3xCD TLASILA set of recycled, re-positioned "hybrids," Die Fehde des Gemischs. We suggest you eat all your meds at once for that one...

As if all this weren't burden enough, on September 15 we'll begin our first, tentative steps into actual Verlag-ness with the publication of a new book of fellow traveler Tom Smith's photographs, and, on October 1, the release of Unpunished, an illustrated volume of TS's 2000-2001 reviews for the late, oh-so-great Bananafish.

Too pro for you? Well, many were reeling, swooning, coughing up clumps of bilious humors, nay, nearly dropping dead under the intense pace of releases. Engines have thus been reversed, and the gargantuan ship of state that is KSV GmbH will be steaming along - at least for the next few months - at a more regal clip.

SOLD OUT: Feinkost Lampe: 26. Februar (KSV 018); Tom Smith & Blue Sabbath Black Fiji - Ich werde nicht nackt sein (KSV 022); Sigtryggur Berg Sigmarsson & Tom Smith - Todesröcheln (KSV 026); Rope Cosmetology - Hinterzimmer-Apotheke (leibt) illegal Meztgerei (KSV 027); Silke Arp Bricht: 3. Juni (KSV 029); and Tom Smith - Hintergrundmusik (KSV 032). Many, many thanks.

ALMOST GONE: Three Resurrected Drunkards - Begriffsschrift (KSV 019) and Twenty Years of Sudden Infant: One Participant's Perspective (KSV 023). Get 'em while you can.

Coming later in 2009: 50 Karl Schmidt Fans Can't Have Jobs!?, a box containing all previously-issued KSV recordings and publications, two DVDs, three bonus CDs, and more, housed in a container ill-suited for stovepipe hat storage, ill-advised for casual perusal. A limited edition of ten units, and as each one will take a week or so to make, beware: the love will surely ooze forth...

Hope everyone is well.

Best,

Karl

Tending to the Flock...

I've been neglecting some of the related sites. Time, as always, is at a premium. ("Time management," a loathsome idea if there ever was one, isn't exactly my forte.) To address these crimes, I went into overdrive and added a blog update to the moldering Miss High Heel profile, uploaded three short videos, over 100 photos, and changed the layout of the Rope Cosmetology page (its Blogger counterpart is still woefully undernourished - forgive), responded to long-standing friend requests at the TLASILA MySpace page (and there's still a lot of work to be done there, apologies in advance, etc.), added all the new and recently issued albums (and accompanying sound files) to the Karl Schmidt Verlag site (yeah, its Blogger doppelganger is also hurting - I'll get around to it, promise), even Twittered a few times yesterday, and responded to some follower tweets.

And one of these millennia I'll complete the latest revamp of the TLASILA web portal. Oy...

Happy Clattering,

Tom

Catching Up with Yesterday...

Finally getting round to clearing out the KSV release queue.

Originally announced for April dissemination, this compendium at last has its micro-moment in the gauzy light of eternal renewal...

You know the story. You know the players. Go.

First five orders come with a free ultra-mini-DVD! See brief snippets of the action! See the power and the glory cut short due to memory card limitations! See Joke rock the fuck out to his fellow performers!

Forget-Me-Don'ts...

I must apologize for issuing so many goddamned albums through KSV, but when my muse wraps her thighs around my skull I find it almost impossible to resist the urge to gnaw, bite, and howl. There's still more on the way, of course - Karl's second volume of Remediated and Decontextualized Field Recordings (KSV 035) is nearly complete, and the five or six titles previously announced (and not yet unleashed) are in various stages of nascence.

(Karl Schmidt - Remediated and Decontectualized Field Recordings Vol. 2; coming soon!)

If you haven't plunked down your hard-earned currency for the Three Resurrected Drunkards album, do so quickly - they're nearly gone. The TS/Black Fiji collection is SOLD OUT. See previous entries for details...

Merci as always for every iota of support, feedback, etc.

Love,

TS

One Straggler, One Lobster-Red Curb Crawler...

(Amended July 6, 2009.)

Guten Tag,

New today from Karl Schmidt Verlag, another instant release, as per credo, ethos, and directive:

KSV 034 Schützenausmarsch: 5. Juli, Hannover

Recorded by Karl, featuring occasional (mostly muted) commentary from your hosts TS & CF, this album features the sounds of Hannover's bizarre Schützenausmarsch, a procession of marching bands comprised of members from Lower Saxony's many gun clubs. By tradition, each club has been up all night drinking (celebrating the conclusion of Schützenfest), and while Sousa enthusiasts are likely to find fault with the parade and its participants, casual ethnographers with a taste for the outré (and just plain fugged-up) will reach a different set of conclusions.

01 Composite (31:18)
02 Version (32:20)
03 Coda (1:04)

Mixed and produced by TS for KSV, July 5, 2009.

Edition of 10.

And...

KSV 019 Three Resurrected Drunkards - Begriffsschrift

This collection has been on the greasy, too infrequently lit back burner for months. The first of Begriffsschrift's two discs details the three weeks of rehearsals that preceded the duo's sophomore performance (March 6, 2009, at Hannover's Silke Arp Bricht); the second documents the final dress rehearsal recordings made at Silke on the afternoon of the performance.

It kills.

101 Rehearsals (February 17-March 1, 2009) (78:07)
201 Dress Rehearsal (March 3, 2009) (59:29)

Composed and performed by Three Resurrected Drunkards:

Pit Noack - prepared cassettes, tape machines, speaker array
Tom Smith - voice

Recorded live by Karl on the H2 at Silke Arp Bricht, Hannover.
Mixed and produced by TS May-June 2009 at Western Blot, Hannover.

Edition of 25.
